FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR LIBRARY

VALENTINE'S DAY was the day we launched our ‘LOVE YOUR LIBRARY’ theme for the rest of February. We believe there are lots of reasons to fall in love with your library and take advantage of all the great resources we offer. For the rest of February we will have displays and activities running so get involved.

This year for Valentine's day we tried our first ever ‘BLIND DATE WITH A BOOK’ promotion. Students  borrowed a mystery book from the library, wrapped in brown paper, so they didn't know what the title was or who the author was. There was however a clue on the front of each book to help you decide and each book was suitable for both boys and girls. Each borrower had to commit to reading at least 20 pages before they returned it as often they were reading a different gentre to what they were used to. This proved to be a great hit and we were sold out (borrowed out) of all the dates on display. The students seemed to enjoy the experience  and even the staff took up the opportunity to try this new idea.

We also had a great selection of ROMANCE novels for those who LOVE this genre.

LOOK OUT FOR MORE ACTIVITIES DURING FEB!

WELCOME BACK

The La Valla Library team welcome you all back for an exciting new year. A special big welcome to all our Year 7 students.

We have had a great rest over the holidays and hope you have too because 2013 is going to be an exciting year and we have lots of new things planned for this year.

We have all been working hard getting lots of new books on the shelves ready for you to borrow. We hope you have all been busy reading over the holidays. Don't forget you are welcome to submit a review just ask one of the Library staff. If you have read any great books in the holidays that we don't have on the shelves please let us know so we can order them in for others to read. We will be showing book trailers on our TV in L3 (Library 3) again this year which are great for assisting you in which book to read next. For those students who would like to make their own book trailer of their favourite book please see the Library staff who can assist you. We have Flip cameras you can borrow to help you.

Our very popular Chess Club will be running once again during lunchtime on Wednesdays and Mrs Street is looking forward to greeting new members. We hope to have a new Book Club starting soon so watch this space for more info. We will be running lots of activities and competitions throughout the year so keep watching the Student bulletin and Library window for upcoming events.

Don't forget we are always happy to hear any of your news and answer any questions you may have so don't be shy.

We look forward to a great year... don't forget to READ... READ... READ!

We are very excited to have two new Kindles in the La Valla Library for students to borrow for a 2 week period. They have been very popular and students are enjoying the experience of a new form of reading. If you would like to go on the waiting list to borrow an e-reader all you need to do is complete a permission form that parents have signed and return it to the La Valla Library.

BOOK WEEK IN THE LIB

After a bit of a disruptive week in the Library during 'Book Week' we did have some activities happening.

The winners of the ART COMP have been decided and we had some wonderful entries. We even had a homeroom entry which was great. The winners were announced at a special celebration in the library.

AND THE WINNERS ARE:
Book trailer:
Dylan Lloyd & Dan Mitchell CH2 (for their amazing  book trailer of ‘The Very Bad Book’ – well done boys!
Drawing/Painting/Ink:
Winner - Charlotte Lyons VT3
Honourable mention – Harney Halls JR0
Written work:
Emily Patterson BK1
Honourable mention – Brandon Davis MK4

A big thank you to all the students that participated in the Art competition for book week. There are some very talented guys out there!

Our 'favourite book' tree was sprouting leaves left right and centre as staff and students wrote their favourite book on a leaf and pinned it to the tree. Some of the favs were:
The book thief by Markus Zusak
Alex Rider by Anthony Horowitz
Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins
Harry Potter and the deathly hallows by J.K. Rowling
Diary of a wimpy kid by Jeff Kinney
Marlie and me by John Grogan
The twits by Roald Dahl

Lunchtime activities included making a sculpture from an old book. Students were shown how to fold the pages in different ways to create a hut. Fabulous bookmarks were also created using old books as inspiration.

A great form of recycling!

THE VERY BAD BOOK - book trailer

by Dylan Lloyd & Dan Mitchell CH2

We'd love more students to make more book trailers of their favourite books for us. If you would like to try your skills you may borrow a FLIP CAMERA from the information desk, edit your movie, then give it to one of the library staff. It doesn't have to be too long, just a couple of mins, and we can show it along with our other book trailers we have showing in the Library Reading Room. Give it a go!
